At DePaul University's Steans Center, relationships with community partners are the cornerstone of our work. Community-based service-learning implies that a significant portion of the learning that takes place within service-learning courses happens at, and in partnership with, community-based and non-profit organizations. We view these relationships as "educational partnerships" where community organizations share in the process of educating our students. At the same time, we work with our community partners to assure that the services provided by students and faculty add value to the existing work of the organization. In sum, we view partners as assets to their communities and our role is to provide students with opportunities for socially-engaged learning while simultaneously expanding the capacity of community partners to improve the lives of the people they serve.
